WEEK 4  -  1/28 thru 2/3

Extra Credit Due Monday 2/4 (worth 50 points):  In light of our discussion on Experimental Probability:  Create an experiment that you can calculate the experimental probability of the actual event as it occurs.  i.e. Making free-throws, flipping a bottle on its end, etc.  Include the following steps:

  • Identify your measurable event (i.e. making a free throw, making a bottle stand on its end by flipping it. etc.)
  • Decide the number of trials you will attempt.  (Attempt the event at least 10 times.)
  • Create a statement that says what you are doing - what is your experiment?
  • Create a table like we did on the board to record your statistical findings for each trial. Label your table (title, columns, rows).  Columns are the attempt numbers 1 thru X; rows are outcome of the event and probability.  As an example, refer to table on page 401 in the book.
  • Record your probabilities as you perform your event (ratios or percentages) in your table as you go.
  • Write the final probability in a statement as a ratio or percentage of your overall event.  i.e. "I made 50% of free-throws out of 10 attempts" or "I made 5/10 free-throws."
  • Assignment must include a few second video of you performing your event.
  • Remember the equation: Ex Prob = # times the event occurs / # of trials
